In 2008 Kirk Lee Aeder photographed professional Hawaiian surfer CJ Kanuha in one of the strangest places possible---stand up paddle surfing off the Kilauea Volcano lava flow on the Big Island of Hawaii. In boiling ocean waters well over 120 degrees Kanuha maneuvered amidst the small waves and at one point came within twenty five feet of the molten red liquid. The photo, taken from a helicopter, was featured around the world in media outlets such as Outside Magazine, Good Morning America, The London Times, BBC, Tracks Magazine Australia, among many others.
